 not effected, but changed...

i woke up with a hangover on my buddies couch to see him, and his wife staring at the t.v. screen. as i looked through the dust and smoke of an explosion i said, "what happened somebody fall asleep smoking a cigarette?" i looked up at my buddy and gave him a half-hearted grin. as i looked back down towards the t.v. i saw something moving across the screen. just then the second tower exploded as i saw the tail end a of an airplane hit.
i had to goto work that day, at a deadend job, with not enough pay, and zero benefits at all. while at work i thought about the morning's happenings, and told myself that i knew i was going to join the military. i was going to finish my lifelong dream. i was going to enlist in the u.s. army to be exact. after a bunch of tiresome paperwork, and many long nights of anticipation, i finally signed up on may 29th of 2003, and flew off to basic training then next morning.
i have been in the service now for a measley 16 months, stationed at ft. sill, oklahoma. in april of this year my unit, an artillery battalion deployed to iraq. the only reason i am home is because of an injury i sustained to my right arm when my humm-vee flipped twice. i am home with my wife, who just graduated from basic training, and her a.i.t. (schooling).
i didn't know anybody in either of the two towers, nor did i know anybody in the pentagon. i don't think i even knew anybody in new york, or pennsylvania. so i wasn't directly effected by 9/11/01. but i was changed. i joined the u.s. army, fought in iraq because of terrorists, and i live my life fighting for everyone who was effected, or could have been.
i love this nation, those stars, and those stripes. god bless us americans.
