i joined the army on august 22, 2001 and was shipped to fort jackson, sc for basic combat training. on september 11, during the time of the attacks, my soon to be basic training unit was conducting an induction ceremony. after the ceremony we were informed of the news and everybody thought it was a joke, something they did to make us think we were going to war right away instead of receiving proper military training. we very quickly realized that we were wrong. no, they weren't about to speed up our training and send us to afghanistan. our training started 2 days later on sept. 13 and we graduated 9 weeks later, nov. 16. i'm currently still in training for my mos in arizona, a year after the attacks. most basic training units (probably all) don't allow use of electronic devices, including tv's, so it was kind of hard trying to keep up with the news. our only resource was our drill sergeants and the news papers they would bring in for us. toward the end of training my drill sergeant brought in some news tapes he had recorded for us. i remember it being very emotional, even considering the first time i had even seen the eastern states was for basic training. the first time i was ever on a plane was the trip from utah to south carolina for basic training. it was all very odd for me, my first time on a commercial plane on the east coast and a few days later a plane crashes into a building in nyc. anyway, since then my motivation in the army has completely changed and i'm anxious to get out there and make a difference.
