A Day I Will Never Forget

it was tuesday, september 11, 2001 at 8 am cst. i had just arrived to work and i had called my sister at home to ask her a question. she told me that a plane had crashed into the world trade center. when she told me that, i thought that it was just a private plane and that it was really nothing to worry about. after i hung up the phone with her, everyone started talking about what happened. then i heard that a second plane had crashed into the other tower. an announcment had come over the entire office that we were tuned into cnn. we all rusehd into the conference room to watch. what i saw on that tv will be in my head for the rest of my life. i saw smoke, lots of smoke. i saw people running for their lives. then that is when the first building came down. the conference room was quiet, then all of a sudden everyone took a deep breath. during all of this, i must have called my mother about 10 or 15 times to get more details. each time i talked to my mom, dad, sister or brothers, i thought of how lucky i was to be able to talk to them and tell them that i love them. i thought about the women who will never be able to talk to or tell their husbands that they love them. or husbands that won't be able to tell their wives the same. i also thought about the children who will never be able to get a hug or kiss from their parents again. i felt like it was wrong to have all of these things and thousands of people will never have that again. you know, we've all been told stories about wwii and vietnam from parents or grandparents. now, we are going to be those parents and grandparents to tell our children and grandchildren stories from
9-11-01. i will never be happy that i get to share those stories with the generations to come. it's something that i never thought i would live through. it is something that i never wanted to live through. if there is one thing i can say to those survivors and the families of those victims of this day, it would be... i can't say enough how sorry i am for their loss. each and every person who died will be in my heart for the rest of my life. i think about that day everyday for the past month. i would like everyone to know that we are a strong country and we will come out of this stronger. with all the lives that were lost, this country will never be the same. thanks to all of the firefighters who died or risked their lives to save others. you are our heros! god bless everyone. like it's been said all over the country, united we stand. we will overcome this. to end this, i will leave you with a song that a group called "live" wrote. the day after the terrorist attacks of september 11th, live shared this touching song with the world, hoping it would help bring comfort to the nation.

even though the world is bleedin
the feeling just fine
all numb in the castle
we were always free to choose
never free enough to find
i wish something would break
cuz we're runnin out of time

and i am overcome
i am overcome
only water in my lungs
i am overcome

these women in the street
pullin out their hair
my master's in the yard
givin light to the unaware
this blasted little place
is just a step amongst the stairs

and i am overcome
i am overcome
only water in my lungs
i am overcome

so drive me out
out to the open field
turn the ignition off
and spin around
your help is here
but i'm parked in this open space
blockin the gates of love
and i am overcome
i am overcome
only water in my lungs
i am overcome
i am overcome, oh lord
i am overcome
only water in my lungs
only water, only water
i am overcome

beautiful drownin
this beautiful drownin
this holy water
this holy water
is in my lungs
and i am overcome
i am overcome
i, i, i am overcome
i am overcome
