i remember everything as it happened just like it was yesterday, more for me then other people because i ended up at ground zero in lower manhattan the night of the 11th. my best friend and i were leaving school at 10:15 to go to our firefighting classes, on our way to the firehouse we heard on the radio about the attacks and that one of the world trade towers had collapsed, so we decided to go by my house before we went to the firehouse. we hurried up and got in my house and turned on the tv, and could not believe what was actually happening. so we then hurried up and went to the firehouse, when we got there, all kinds of people were up there, everyone with their eyes glued on the tv. our deputy chief told us to call our instructor and let him know we werent goin to class, but he told us we had to. so after alittle while we left the firehouse and went to the training center, while we were there everyone was talking about leaving and everyone kept on looking at the sky. after class was over we went back to the firehouse, there they had ordered pizza and everyone was still camped out watching the tv. after a couple hours about half the guys went home, and shortly after our assistant chief came in and asked if anyone would be willing to go to new york for a couple days, at first we thought he was just fooling around, but then he wrote a note up on the dry erase board in the tv room, i was the first to put my name up under it. he told me he wouldnt know if we would be goin for almost another 24 hours. so i hung around the firehouse for a couple more hours then i went home. around 8 o'clock i was online and the deptuy chiefs screen name popped up and he asked me if i was going to ny. i had to ask him a bunch of times if he was just playing with me or if he was for real. so i got offline and called the firehouse to check with other people to see if he was lying, and he wasnt. so i packed my bags, called my mom and told her, and ran over to my grandparents house across the street and told them. my grandfather was alittle upset that i was going, but he was proud of my for wanting to go. then i left for the firehouse. we left our firehouse in bryans road, maryland at 9:00pm and arrived in ny at 1:30am. we stayed in ny untill the evening of 11-13 and then returned home to md, as another crew from our station went up, but they were sent home the next day. this just goes to show the brotherhood of firefighters, although i am only 18, i was 17 at the time, i wanted to do all i could to help, as i felt they were part of my family, a very large family.
