 Like a Movie????

in the midst of our grief, we must all ask ourselves some hard questions. how many of us, in the aftermath of 9/11/01, have said or heard said "i thought i was seeing a movie." that speaks volumes about us as a people, that upon viewing something so horrific, so many relate to it immediately through contact with our 'entertainment'? have we become so jaded, so complacent, so lacking in human decency that we allow ourselves to be entertained in such a way that when such an atrocity occurs, it looks totally familiar to us...we've seen it before, you see. we've actually paid to see it, we allow our children and teenagers to view and mimic it. this, i believe, is a monstrous blight.
no, i don't believe our complacency toward violence in our movies, tv shows, video games and the like caused this evil to occur. but we must be aware that the rest of the world does view us through one of our biggest exports -- our entertainment. we say we are a peace-loving nation, but this betrays us. if any good can come of the tragic events of 9/11/01, let at least part of it be that we, as a nation, began to repudiate violence as entertainment.
