i was in algebra two, the class had just started and our teacher was going around checking our homework. for the record, our teacher was orginally from new york city. the intercom came on and our teacher hushed everyone so we could hear what the principal was saying. our principal said, and i will never forget these words or the pain in her voice, "a plane has crashed into the world trade center." my teacher's face turned ashen white. she immediately turned on the tv to cnn. i remember at that moment i checked the clock and it read 9:11. it was scary. during the next period our principal came on the intercom again to announce that the members of our school band who were in washington d.c. at the time were safe.
a few days later, my third period environmental science teacher showed our class something that helped. he had gotten onto the public satellite feed and had taped several minutes of footage. it was just of the earth, of the usa and how small, yet how big, of a difference the attacks made. you could see ground zero as just a cloud of dust and smoke. somehow it was heartening to know that so many people, that so much of the planet, was still okay. to know that so many people were still alive and all right.
i just wanted to share that.
