 to be so far away...

on the morning of september 11, 2001 i was living in san diego, california about as far from new york as possible. my mom woke me up while she was crying and said that the world wasn't right. i remember being in denial as the first building fell, and then was so saddened for all the americans, in new york, washington d.c., pennsylvania, and everyone in between from the mexican border to canada who were affected at that very instant. the planes stopped flying into san diego int'l airport, and at that moment i realized that this was an american tragedy, where those of us on the opposite end of the continent were united with those 3,000 miles away. i wanted to let my fellow americans know that i truly morned for their personal losses and for the national loss. later in november i was in new york, and i saw the devastation. the smells and sights will never leave my memories, and the saddness still lingers one year later. i now live in sacramento, and i thank god daily for the life of our nation, the spirit of new york city that will never be extinguished, and am still saddened to think of all the brave women and men who lost their lives that beautiful and tragic september morning.
