 my september 11th, 2001

i went to campus (ku) at about 7:30 in the morning to go to work at the entomology museum from 8-5 on september 11th. i get to work and sit down at my station, then i turned on the radio. i expected music to be coming from the station i was listening to at the time, but all i heard was some guy going on and on about some giant explosion. after a minute or two it was repeated that one of the world trade center buildings was hit.

i sat there dumbfounded and listened for about 10 more minutes, ignoring my work. how could i concentrate on something when all of these events were going on in new york.

rob, my boss, came in around 8 and started making some coffee. he came over to say hi to me and i told him that there was some kind of terrorist attack happening in new york and it appeared as if a plane hit one of the buildings. he was as shocked as i was, you should've seen the look on his face.

he rushed off to tell the rest of the people at work, and they all kept updated throughout the day through radio as i did.

i eventually got back to working and listened to the ensuing events of the day until i got home at 5 pm. that whole time i had no idea what these attacks looked like. i couldn't imagine the sight of the towers collapsing. i turned on the news at home, and there it was. they just kept showing it over and over. i popped a tape in (for posterity sake) and taped 6 hours of news, including bush's address to the nation.

i'll never forget that day.
