 helplessness

i woke the morning of sept. 11 to my alarm clock blaring at 8:45. i hit the snooze button twice, and when it came back on at about 9:15, they were talking about "new york under siege" - being a native nyc girl, i woke right up. they said that a plane had hit the wtc. as i struggled to shower and get ready for my 10am class, i was glued to cnn. i saw what was happening, and i tried frantically to call my father, who works for morgan stanley, on teh 74th floor. i could not reach anyone - my mother in westchester, my father's cell phone, my sister in hoboken. i was shaking with fear. having heard the news, two of my sorority sisters came over to comfort me and help me try to reach someone. i stayed home all day and tried, to no avail, to reach someone. i tried to get a car to head up there, but with the pentagon being hit, there was no way i could get from richmond to ny. i didnt hear from anyone until 11pm that night - for the 14 hours i couldn't find anything out, i was helpless - like so many others that day.
