i was in new york for a wedding on the 9th of september. i grew up on the east coast, but all my time there i never really got 'see' new york city. so, i decided to extend my weekend and schedule a flight out on tuesday to do some sight seeing before i headed back to san francisco.
tuesday morning, i'm showering and getting ready to start my trip to newark airport for a flight home after a relaxing, enjoyable weekend. suddenly, my friend's roommate opens the door to the bathroom open and says "a plane just crashed into the world trade center!".....hmmmm.....i casually dry off and go over to check out the tv. there it is. the wtc1 smoking like a chimney! i think, 'how bizarre, how could a plane hit the wtc? is this an accident?'.......suddenly! out of the corner of the screen, another plane crashes into wtc2! "holy s***!! the mouth drops.... this is no accident! we are being attacked!....i remember looking around room to make sure it was safe.... sounds weird, but you really felt vulnerable.... these terrorists were on our soil, the same soil that we walked on a day before and felt completely safe on. now we don't.
we watch the local live coverage for the next couple of hours periodically poking our heads out of my friends brooklyn apartment window to see the cloud of smoke and ash billowing from manhatten...... just 14 hours earlier, i was in the top of the wtc2, enjoying a fine brew and good company, and 2 hours from now i was supposed to get on a plane from newark to san francisco!...... one of friends used to tell my i was the luckiest person he knew. now i believe him.
